Servant to the Slave - Mary Slessor
by Catherine MacKenzie
Mary Slessor grew up in the slums of Dundee in the 1800's. Industry was booming but housing was sub- standard and life expectancy was low. Illness, disease and malnutrition killed many children before they reached the age of five. Mary was lucky - born into a poor family, abused by her father - she was still alive. Dundee was Mary's training ground for a far fiercer battle. Mary left the shores of Scotland while only in her early twenties to immerse herself in reaching the lost tribes of Calibar in West Africa. Her preparation in the slums of Dundee was the key ingredient to her success on the mission field - that and her tireless trust and belief in her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He was the reason she was there. Calibar today still remembers Mary Slessor, affectionately known as "Ma", her influence on that area of Africa was astounding. Superstition demanded that families kill twin babies and murder slaves and women at funerals - the Lord Jesus Christ that Mary Slessor brought to these people set them free from all that. They were set free from the law of sin and death.

Slave Set Free - John Newton
by Irene Howat
John stood and watched as some of the largest waves he had ever seen threw themselves at the ship. Very little stood between the young slave ship captain and death – and he knew it. His panic and fear made him think only of himself and nothing for the hundreds of men, women and children chained in the hold below. However, God still heard his prayers and the cries of the tortured humanity pleading for mercy and justice. The very man selling them into slavery would soon fight for their freedom. John Newton was one of the worst abusers of the African slave as he travelled the oceans to make money from their misery – but in the end his life was changed and so was theirs.

Ten Boys Who Used Their Talents
by Irene Howat
J S Bach; Paul Brand; John Bunyan; James Clerk Maxwell; Wilfred Grenfell; C.S. Lewis; Samuel Morse; Ghillean Prance; C.T. Studd; George Washington-Carver; What can you do for God? These ten boys grew up to become successful men. The two things they have in common is that they all put to good use the talents and gifts they had, and they all believed that God had given them to be used. Paul Brand took medicine into new lands to bring hope to the sick, Ghillean Prance's love of the world around him led to Kew Gardens, still a centre of excellence in studying God's creation, C S Lewis opened the door into Narnia and opened the hearts of many to new faith; C T Studd excelled on the cricket and the mission field; Wilfred Grenfell was an energetic explorer of the Arctic; J S Bach's music still inspires millions, as Christ inspired him; James Clerk Maxwell's faith in God's ordering of the universe led to key discoveries in science; Samuel Morse patented many inventions one of which has saved many lives; George Washington governed a country as he followed the Lord; John Bunyan was imprisoned to shut him up yet wrote a classic that still speaks today.

Ten Girls Who Didn't Give In
by Irene Howat
This book is a mixture of exciting, sad and challenging testimonies. I enjoyed reading about Blandina, Perpetua, Lady Jane Grey, Anna Askew, Lysken Dirks, Marian Harvey, Margaret Wilson, Judith Werghburg, Betty Stam and Esther John. These women loved their saviour and lived their lives which emulated Christ in many practical ways. I found this challenging because it made me think that I should stand out and tell people about God and not to have the fear of man but rather to have the first fear of man but rather to have first the fear of God. Life can be hard being a Christian at home or school, but with the Lord's strength and grace he enables us to shine forth as his light. I recommend this book to everyone, including Mums & Dads.
