What is Before Five in a Row? Let's begin with what it isn't. It isn't a curriculum. Neither is it an aggressive, academic training regimen designed to turn your pre-schooler into a scholastic superachiever. It is a rich treasure of creative ideas designed to help you gently, consistently prepare your children for the life-long adventure of learning. For children ages two to four, Before Five in a Row is better than a curriculum! The book is divided into two parts. The first section contains hundreds of simple ideas and activities developed around 23 of the finest books ever written for young children. You'll find delightful activities built around such wonderful classics as Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?, The Runaway Bunny, The Carrot Seed, Corduroy, Caps for Sale, The ABC Bunny, The Snowy Day, Katy-No-Pocket and Blueberries for Sal. Each unit provides creative ideas and enjoyable activities designed to cultivate intimacy with your child while building vital learning-readiness skills. Part two of Before Five in a Row is a rich resource, filled with specific ideas designed to help you prepare children for learning through simple, everyday activities. You'll find ideas for bathtime, bedtime, in the kitchen, at the grocery store and much more; information and inspiration to help you maximize these precious years and prepare your children for real learning!

Five in a Row was created by Jane Claire Lambert, a successful home-school teacher with more than 17 years experience. Five in a Row provides students with a unit-study approach to early education based on outstanding children's literature. Together, the four volumes of Five in a Row provide lesson plans covering Social Studies, Language, Art, Applied Math, and Science in a way that causes children to fall in love with learning. Intended to be easily usable, even for new homeschool mothers, each days activities are carefully laid out. Expect to be ready to teach with as little as five minutes of preparation time. You'll find everything you need to be an effective teacher at your fingertips-pronunciation guides to foreign words or phrases, background information on history, geography, art and science lessons, facts, figures, and activity suggestions for a wonderful variety of hands-on learning experiences.Visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners will all benefit from Five in a Row's variety of lessons and activities. Bring out one of the books listed in your Five in a Row manual and then locate the corresponding lesson plan in your teacher's guide. Read the story aloud each day during the week and use Jane's suggestions and lesson plans to lead your children on a wonderful learning adventure. You'll teach a different subject each day beginning with social studies on Monday. You'll find history lessons, geography lessons, discussions on foreign culture taken directly from the story you've just read. On Tuesday you'll examine the author's use of language, learning about punctuation, vocabulary, literary devices, creative writing and more. Beyond Five In A Row and the optional Christian Character Bible Study Supplement (one volume correlating with the three Beyond volumes) is aimed at ages 8-12. There are three Beyond volumes and each volume will take one semester to complete. It is similar to Five in a Row, only Beyond uses "chapter books" rather than "picture books." Volume 1 utilises The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner and Homer Price by Robert McCloskey as it's two fiction selections, and Thomas Edison by Sue Guthridge and Betsy Ross by Ann Weil from the Childhood of Famous Americans Series for its two non-fiction selections.

Beyond Five In A Row and the optional Christian Character Bible Study Supplement (one volume correlating with the three Beyond volumes) is aimed at ages 8-12. There are three Beyond volumes and each volume will take one semester to complete. It is similar to Five in a Row, only Beyond uses "chapter books" rather than "picture books." Volume 2 utilises Sarah Plain and Tall and Skylark by Patricia MacLachlan as its two fiction selections, and The Story of George Washington Carver by Eva Moore and Helen Keller by Margaret Davidson from Scholastic Biographies for its two non-fiction selections.

Beyond Five In A Row and the optional Christian Character Bible Study Supplement (one volume correlating with the three Beyond volumes) is aimed at ages 8-12. There are three Beyond volumes and each volume will take one semester to complete. It is similar to Five in a Row, only Beyond uses "chapter books" rather than "picture books." Volume 3 utilises The Cricket In Times Square by George Selden, Illustrated by Garth Williams and The Saturdays written and illustrated by Elisabeth Enright as its two fiction selections, and Neil Armstrong-Young Flyer by Montrew Dunham and Marie Curie and the Discovery of Radium by Ann E. Steinkefor its two non-fiction selections.

Above and Beyond (ages 12 up)

Above & Beyond Five in a Row is FIAR's newest product geared for students ages 12 and up. Unlike other Five in a Row products, this latest offering is aimed directly at the student. Having teacher participation is wonderful, but not necessary. Students can take this book on their own and set off on a wonderful learning adventure in the best Five in a Row tradition--great books, lessons and learning. Those who are familiar with other Five in a Row products will find the same Five in a Row "joy of learning" packaged in a warm, user-friendly, literature-based unit study approach. This "First Adventure" is based on the novel Hitty: Her First Hundred Years by Rachel Field. Filled with history, science, literature and much more, this delightful book provides the gateway to a wonderful season of learning for students using the lesson plans found in Above & Beyond Five in a Row. Designed to be completed as a 6-8 week stand-alone unit study (when supplemented with math, spelling and grammar) or savored slowly over several months as a delightful learning supplement to other curricula.
